South Ram River Scenery & Wildlife

One in the canyon

A beautiful day spent fishing a deep pool where a fine cutthroat awaits.

Concentrate!

Sometimes it is difficult to do so. Each corner of the river offers a new view...

Grimace

The fish, not you. You'll smile, ol' Grimace says hi once again.

Chinook

An October Chinook arch forming at sunset. The warm winds of late autumn provide beautiful moments.

The Trestle pool.

Clearer times reveal sunken bands of rock ledges similar in appearance to a sunken railroad trestle.

Pockets of fun

Left and right of the main channel, excellent water awaits.

Blue

Ol' blue waits for his photo to be snapped before swimming home. We'll say hi again.

Summer heat

Warm summer weather gets to 90F for a week or two each year. Otherwise, we enjoy 70 to 85F and enjoyable conditions.

Camp

Strong and sturdy tents and a beautiful sunset.

The last pool

A cast or two before supper just above camp.

Canyon Reflection

A fine eye of a beautifully coloured cutthroat.

Towering...

Canyon cliffs rise above the river, providing unique photo angles.

At a distance

One of several sets of waterfalls. This one is at the depths of the canyon, as the rock is cut over 1000 feet.

Hold on!

Burning around the corner and away from the camera. A nice take on the hopper.

A healthy male

Thick at the shoulders and strong as any, this male cutt is ready to go.

Sighting

Looking down into the depths of those deep canyon pools. The trout move about as the hatch begins. Each finds its lie as the duns emerge.

Sighted, landed

This fine 19" male came to the drake, and then to the net.

Shoulders

Head and shoulders actually. A fine male heading home.

Dim lights

A fine moment in late October - an old friend sighted and cast to.

Eddy line

A cast to the seam and a big set of lips. Fish on!

Surprise!

Not all fish are where you expect. This one held at the tailout along the edge in 8" of water feeding on nymphs.

Last of the year.

He came up to the hopper. One last rise in late October.

Summer's morning

The early morning warmth of July. The spinner fall fades to the onslaught of skittering stones.

Evening

The canyon filtered light adds dramatic moods.

Beauty

The fish or the pool? A fine moment at a favorite pool.

Evening glow

Summer smoky haze from the fires of a dry summer. Smoke from distant fires in Montana and BC add color to our skies.

Lighting

Blades of grass emerge from the bare canyon rock walls. Fragile life in a hostile location.

Brilliance

A thick male shows his colour weeks after the river opens, post spawning.

Distant Thunder

Storms can sully the river quickly. Distant thunder is welcome, so long as it isn't upstream...

Puffballs

The sure sign of summer warmth.

Wanderer

Timber wolves, solitary animals, amble through the canyon at certain times of the year, in given locations, looking for young bighorn sheep that call the canyon walls home.
