Ram River,
Alberta.
There is a certain component
of the angling public that does something special to preserve what they
see as special. These people pursue regulations that favor trout
populations, seek ways of increasing enforcement, educate other anglers to
the ways of trout, lobby for better habitat preservation strategies, and
take an intimate interest in the fish.
We were responsible for getting the river catch & release, and
developing the
Stream Watch program to better the enforcement and awareness
of this river.
They say that cutthroat trout
live 6 to 8 years. Science has show that the Ram River cutthroat
trout are among the longest living westslope cutthroat trout anywhere. We have
a 22" female that we first took notice of in 1996 when she was
16". At that time she was about 4, maybe 5 years old as the Ram at
that point is a slower growing system. She swam the river in 3
given runs each year through 2007. The top run is where she dropped out to after
spawning. The middle run is where she dropped to as the waters lower in
early summer. The bottom run is where she dropped to in mid fall as the
water lowers more and the temperatures tell her to buckle up for another
long winter. We caught her nearly 60 times. We
have several of these "pet" fish.
